+1 Childcare provider: Jacqueline

I obtained services from this family / home daycare, dayhome and I find that:

"We used Jacqueline’s daycare for approximately two months for our two children ages 3 and 1. When we first met Jacqueline, we were impressed with her kindness and gentleness towards the children. Our kids immediately took to her.

As time went on and the children became more comfortable in the daycare, issue began to arise with our son with aggressiveness. Jacqueline had discussed the issues with us and we attempted to work with her to resolve them. We were told that in the past she had had some other issues with aggression with some other children and that eventually the she had to let those other children go as the issues could not be resolved.

As time went on, the relationship between Jacqueline and our son seemed to deteriorate. One day our son came home and told us that Jacqueline had yelled at him and when we asked her about it she said she had to raise her voice with him because he was disrupting the other children during nap time and was apparently disturbing “her time”. We found out that while the children nap in the basement, that they appear to be left unattended. Also, on our kids second last day there, she had suggested to me, that she felt, our son had autism.

The last day of our stay with the daycare came when our son apparently had hit another child and we got a call from Jacqueline stating that we had to come and get our son immediately and that he had become a liability to her daycare and we had to find other arrangements. We left right away to go and get him to find him sitting alone in what appeared to be an extended time out away from the other children. I have no idea how long our son was left alone like that but I can only assume that it was from the time that the incident occurred to the time we came to pick him up which was approximately 45 minutes.

We often found the children sitting in front of the television watching shows that might not have been age appropriate (i.e. spy kids 3 which has an MPAA rating of PG for action sequences and peril). We also were told that the children were going to be left for approximately 20 minutes with Jacqueline’s teenage daughter while Jacqueline went to pick up he younger daughter at school. While we had agreed to this, in retrospect we do not feel that this was in our children’s best interest.

We have since found other daycare arrangements for our two children and there have been absolutely no incidents reported to us. Our children are much happier and it is obvious now that this environment might not have been the best for our children. I believe that while Jacqueline’s daycare does provide good care for the children, with fresh home made meals and plenty of play time, it may be more suitable for younger children and not older higher energy children such as our son.

Pros:

• Lots of toys
• Caregiver is caring and soft spoken
• Delicious home made meals
• Good communication via a daily journal with details about the children’s daily activities
• Better suited for younger less active children
• Experienced in home schooling and child care/child development.

Cons:

• Children’s play area mainly restricted to basement which is currently under construction. Not a lot of light and the basement when we were last there was largely unfinished.
• Children left alone for approximately 20 minutes in the afternoon with teenage daughter while younger daughter is picked up after school. This leads to the afternoon snack being late.
• tv often on when dropping off and picking up kids.
• No apparent structure to the day
• Appears to leave children unattended while they nap in basement
• Has admitted to raising voice when disciplining.
• Timeouts perhaps used ineffectively or too often or for too long for age of child."
