I hate being dismissed/not taken seriously
i have an 18 month old DCG who i suspected was coming down with a cold. Yesterday she had a runny nose, a bit of a cough when she lay down, she was warm (but no fever) and had teary eyes. I mentioned to dad upon pick up and asked him to monitor her because if she gets worse, then she has to stay home. Of course...he attributes it to teething and her shots from last week. That very well could be true, but in my opinion, it seemed more like symptoms of a cold, but he dismissed my suspicions. Went on to tell me about her molars coming in etc.... Today she is full blown cold mode (i knew it!). Kinda cranky, not wanting to play much, tired plus all the above symptoms. You can totally tell in the kid's eyes that she is sick. I am not stupid, i have been around kids for 20 years and have had 2 kids of my own. It's obvious to me.
I really hate being dismissed like that. It's disrespectful in a way, isn't it? No one else is as close to the child for 9 hours everyday as we as DCP's are, we get to know the child just as well as the parents. When get to know the child's cues, mannerisms, quirks, etc. It drives me nuts when the parents don't take me seriously. They don't take into consideration that they are potentially spreading the cold to all the other kids, all the other kid's families, plus my own family. I guess some people don't think that a cold is a big deal. I understand that people can't take time off for every little thing but don't dismiss me when i am telling you your kid is sick.
What's your policy on kids with colds? are they allowed to come to daycare?
