Disobedient parents!

Is it just me or is the hardest part about daycare the parents?!?

So, Mom wants me to potty train the toddler. Dad always drops said toddler off with a diaper on. They never leave enough diapers or clothes to do either one the whole day. One day I had to dig around in my crawl space for pullups. What do you do if your parents just don't follow the rules? My contract lists that they must leave a full bag of diapers here and one extra change of clothes. I don't have a policy listed for potty training though. I've never had a child here in that situation. *sigh* But they won't leave more than one extra shirt and pants, and the most diapers I have ever been able to get them to leave is 6. We're back to only one left but I told Dad today that the diapers were gone!

What would you require for potty training? What do you do if they won't leave the appropriate items for their child?

If they don't bring you diapers, don't accept the child in the morning. If they are not bringing more diapers e.g. you asked for another pack as it's almost gone and they use them all up in a day, call for pick up "Bobby's on his last diaper so you need to come and pick him up or drop off more." Of course I would only do this for families that repeatedly didn't do it. I have "borrowed" a diaper from another kid for the one that forgot or if it is the end of the day and I put the last diaper on the kid then I just tell the parent at pick up. If they forget them, refuse the child.

I don't have a written policy on potty training but when each child gets to that stage I have a discussion with the parents. I think it's best for the child to have a consistent approach to it so if the parents have a plan in mind and I am okay with it, I approach it their way. Many times the parents say they don't have a plan so I suggest what I think will work best from experience and we go from there. One main rule I have is that a child needs to be accident free at daycare for 2 weeks before I will consider letting them come in just underwear. They also have to be able to tell me they need to go to washroom and they must be able to pull down and up their clothing with very minimal help from me. The parents know that they are to send multiple change of clothes during this stage. If I send 3 wet pants home I expect 3 clean pairs the next day to replace.

I have a dresser that each child has a drawer in. Their diapers, wipes, creams and extra clothes all go in here. I let the parents know when and what they need to replenish a few days ahead of time so they have time to run out and buy some. I have almost always had parents just send the whole sleeve of diapers at once. If they run out of diapers I have also borrowed from another child and replaced when they brought diapers. This very rarely happens though. If a parent were to consistently not have enough diapers for their child I would do the same as torontokids and call for pick up. It's not up to me or the other parents to be supplying diapers.

I have had a child not have a spare pair of pants here and I just let him run around with just a diaper and texted the parents to let them know they would need to bring a pair to go home in and also a couple pairs for the drawer. I sometimes have spare clothes here but at that time I had no pants and just a skirt lol. There was another time it happened to the same child and I just put him in the skirt and his parents brought pants at pick up lol.

Lol 5LM, I've done that too. I've also sent kids home in long t-shirts belonging to my older sons and a couple times, snow pants. You've gotta do what you've gotta do :)

It was kinda my fault because I didn't realize he didn't have a spare pair but really, if I send home a dirty pair wouldn't it just be common sense to replace it? lol.

Mom picked up that day and thought he looked cute but did take it off and put pants on to go home in haha

I have really great parents that always bring what I request, right away. They leave plenty of extra clothes and full sleeves of diapers. But I do find that almost all of them don't think to send back a change of clothes when one is sent home. I often think if a pair of pants go home doesn't it make sense to send a pair the next day so we always have the same number of extra outfits here. But, the reality is that the families get home, make dinner while entertaining a tired child, do bedtime routine and get their kid to bed. Wake up and rush through morning routine. I think they truly just don't think of it. So, I just make sure to send home that text saying I need a restock of ___, before I am fully out. Not a big hassle on my part.

But, it would be a big hassle if they only gave one days worth of diapers at a time or one pair of pants. Perhaps they are low on funds and don't want to send too many? I also wonder if perhaps the families that are low on funds don't change their child as often as we do. I change diapers pretty much every 2hrs as that is just what works best with our schedule. Pretty sure families at home may change only every 3-4hrs (I use cloth so don't know for sure). If this is the case, they may feel you are wasting the diapers and costing them too much?

That's what my husband and i have thought about some kids i have cared for. Maybe money is the issue for *some* That's why they only send a few diapers at a time, or just one change of clothes, or clothes that are too small/too big, old beat up shoes, ask to pay you after pay day, etc. I don't hesitate to remind them when my pay day is, or that i need more supplies for their kids. Luckily, i also have good parents now who always have extra diapers/clothes on hand. They all leave diaper bags here because they use them all the time, as well as supplies here, so it's rare that i actually run out of something, and if i do, the babies both use Pampers size 6 so i will just use one from the other kid, or vice versa :D. I too don't wait until i am all out, i usually remind parents a week in advance. They usually bring at least a sleeve or a whole box of diapers to me with 1/2 refill bags (100) of wipes.

I like to have 2-3 changes of clothes on hand for the children. I don't advertise this, but if i am doing laundry during the day, i will wash the kid's pants if they get dirty, wet etc. no effort on my part really.
