Child Swearing!

I have a 2 1/2 year old boy who is very good at communicating...has been for a while now. But lately, his choice of words/phrases have been very concerning! When he's angry or fighting over a toy, he'll say "f**king shit" or "f**king guy"! It's not like he's just merely repeating a phrase he's overheard, he's actually using it in the right context! The other day, I said...."oh...who had a poop", and he actually said, clear as day, so and so "had a sh*t"! I have spoken to his parents about it, and they are aware of it as he has said those things at home too. The mom said that it was from dad, and I have no doubt it is! If you ask him where he's learned these words from, he'll say from me!!! Then in the next breath he says from one of the other dcks.....but I know it's from home. When I hear him saying those words, I put him immediately in time out and afterwards I explain to him that we don't say bad words here. Now, would you mention this to the other parents? The other dcks are around the same age, so they're soaking everything up. The last thing I want the other parents to think is that I'm talking that way to their children!! Has anyone else had this experience?

Wow! Never hurts to be preventative. I would simply tell the other parents that a (nameless) child has been swearing. It is something that you are working on (maybe list a few ways) and that you are working hard to teach ALL children that it is not acceptable.

Then...if their child does swear or blame you it is less of a shock to them!

If dad isn't working on it on his end this will be a tough battle for a bit!! But kids learn different places different rules. It is just really hard to grasp the idea that doing something is BAD if dad does it all the time!!

Personally, what I think is happening is this....the parents have recently separated and I think dad is getting a bit overwhelmed when he has the child, which is causing him to blurt out these words. I'm not making excusing for the dad, no way....I just think this has all started happening since the separation....

Definitely! My parents do not swear neither do their children. There is no swearing in this house and the parents know it. If I ever get a child who swears they are on probation and the parents no about the swearing right away. I don't want to lose the good parents I have. If I can't curb the swearing in one or two weeks they are gone.

Yikes ! I would prob start by informing parents and then talk over him , the same as shadowing play . As he opens his mouth I would be already saying , use nice words or you need to play by yourself .
