Snow wimps?

Anyone else have a snow wimp? A child that is completely competent. A child that is fairly independent, calm, not whiny inside then you get out in the snow and they just whine and play useless?

My 27month old DCG is doing this and it drives me bonkers. All I can assume is that her parents and grandparents(that care for her 2x a week) are carrying her around outside. She just whines, says up and then flops there doing nothing.

I have cleared a large area outside and have cleared many paths throughout the large yard for them to run around. My 23 month old daughter runs laps. It's not an issue of immobility. Though, this child does choose to ignore the path, to get herself into waist deep snow. I leave her, because she is choosing to get herself in deep snow, she can choose to get herself out of it. She is a very physically capable child. She is just a complete snow wimp.

She's started to try and stand beside me whining...so my solution is to not stand still...so she at least has to walk to keep up with me. She's caught on so now sits in the snow and whimpers.

I figure at this point there is no point into trying to get her to have fun, I just do my best to not reward the whining.

Yep had those kinds of kids before although at that age no, it's usually the little ones. I just ignore the whining. Eventually they realize it isn't any fun to sit there when the others are running around and having fun.

I've definitely had snow wimps before, although thankfully I don't have one this year. Some kids just really don't like winter I think and I haven't found a magic solution, aside from constantly pulling them in a sled which seems to be the only thing that keeps a snow wimp from being miserable. But that's a lot of work, and at some point they do need to learn to grow a pair and find ways to enjoy the outdoors.

I have the 12-18 months crew that are like this. I can't carry or entertain them all day, so I put a bunch of toys in front of them, and hope they figure out a way to play. Most of their parents don't take them oudoors in the winter, so they have no clue what to do.

I find, like alot of things, daycare is the place for little ones to learn how to play outside in winter.

It can take some kids longer than others to accept and realize that they can actually play and have fun in their snow suits. It took my younger daughter almost all of last winter to accept it, now this winter she has lots of fun. The 25 month dcg I have now took almost 2 months before she would actually move when we went outside. Now she runs and rolls and climbs.

Do you have toys, a slide or a small snow hill in your yard that they can use? I also have kids shovels that they enjoy using, though they actually need to have use of their thumbs inside their mitts to use them. It might take some encouragement in showing them they can climb, slide or dig to make them realize snow is fun.

Yep, we have a pretty good sized snow hill, that I've made with easy climb levels, they have shovels, and other large toys, 2 big play houses, and like I mentioned I've shovelled lots of paths for easy walking.

My daughter plays with everything so there's no mistaking what the items are for and how to use them. I've tried to break the steps down on how to climb etc, but she has no interest in helping herself while outside. We'll see if she comes along before spring!

I lucked out this year and don't really have any but last year was horrible!! I'm sure the neighbours thought I was torturing them!!! Lol

I'm definitely a snow wimp though!! Haha. I will likely never enjoy winter!!

Lol, I'm the same way. My dc kids want to stay out a lot longer than I do. I'm standing there shivering and they are having the time of their lives!

I have one! He is an "outside wimp" though. Happy as a clam inside but anytime outside and he is miserable. He has gotten better in the yr he's been with me but still struggles. Has his good and bad days too. Yesterday he was miserable but today he was pretty content.

I live in GVRD, British Columbia. I have become a 'snow wimp'. Most kids here are so flabbergasted by snow they either fear it or embrace it with a passion as they know it is fleeting. Meanwhile...the whole city shuts down cause we have no real resources for snow...and well...lets just say it isn't our deal. Now rain...that we have lots of experience with. :)
