We don't need it but I think some are saying they were using it as their identification to parents. When I use my BN for my felt business that is what goes on forms. It proves I am a business and can collect HST.
A daycare centre would have a BN as a registered business and not be giving out personal info such as the dirctor/owner's SIN and we should be allowed to do the same thing. It isn't something I have worried about too much since it has only been the last while that there seems to be such an issue with identity theft. Years ago everyone was asking for your SIN to be put down as info - now a driver's license number is used instead.

I have a business number so I can put that on my receipts instead of my SIN, which I will not provide. I was advised to do this precisely because of identity theft concerns. Identity theft has become much more of a concern that last few years. It was worth the $60 fee to me, even if that is all I use it for. I also opened a bank account in my business name to accept cheques made out to the business, but my insurance company then told me I could only accept cheques made out to me personally since I would need to be an ECE to have a daycare... yes, I know the insurance company is wrong sigh, but I'm not about to take on a fight with a major corporation.

You might possibly be able to get away with using your BN, but I have learned that this is unacceptable to CRA for receipts issued to parents (I've spent quite a bit of time talking with CRA on this matter), so just be aware that they have stated only SIN, not BN. (though it would be great if we could get away without giving our SIN)
