Hi, I am new and have a small child care in Victoria, BC.
I need your Help now and I ll help back when I can
I am new here and there is a lot to learn, I am an experienced (15 Years pre school teacher, ) internationally,
I am thinking to open my own day care, at home, Basement.
I moved to Canada 4 years back and was advice with all wrong info,so I changed my career and went to banking, but I miss teaching and want to go back to it, also want to work for myself .
will you please share your experience and knowledge with me? I am in Toronto, Do I need a licence ?? how much will insurance costs me? can I open a daycare in basement.( if not I will move to a house with walk out basement if I have to ) I hear I can have up to 5 kids without licence .
where to get my licence If i need one. how long that will take ?
usually how much is a charge for a child per a day ?
I Dont have teaching degree, but experience and psychology degree. I taught in schools for 15 years ( outside of Canada )
I will really appreciate your help.
Asal ( miss teaching so much I can not wait )
If you connect with one of the Early Years centres in your area they will be able to put you in touch with the right information or who to contact to get the information.
Unless your town has additional restrictions most of Ontario follows the following rules: you can have 5 children under age 10 and do not have to count your own in that total. You may not ever even for a few minutes have more than 5 daycare children even if you have a helper. You can do daycare wherever in your home you wish provided you have taken safety and comfort into consideration such as escape routes, natural light from windows, plenty of ceiling lights, etc.
What is confusing is that your home has a daycare but it is not a daycare centre and there are different rules for a daycare centre (anything with more than 5 children in care needs to follow centre rules).
Another option would be to contact a daycare agency and they will help you set up your home for daycare. There are additional restrictions in terms of ages mix of the children in care but they will give the support you need to get started in daycare.
