How would you handle a 3 year old always wanted to talk about boobies, birds, vajayjay's and poop. Sometimes using the word shit. I am all for kids knowing about it but some other parents aren't... Not sure what I should say to his mom... Any ideas, or do you think it's okay?
I would write mom an email, only because I don't want the child to get the extra attention of being present during the conversation. I would email and let her know, these are the words that he's saying. Tell her the behaviour is not acceptable in your home and you are doing X Y and Z to assisst in stopping it. Then ask what she's doing at home to prevent it.
if the child was talking about it out of context or just talking about it just so he/she could talk about it then I would simply tell him that it wasnt polite and if he/she wanted to continue to talk about ______ then they could do it in the bathroom because that where _____ belongs. As for the swearing... I would definatley discuss that with mom or dad.
yep! just let mom know this seems to be the childs topic of choice lately, ask her to handle it at home. Let her know your plan of action while the child is with you..i.e.: you will inform the child there is a time and place to talk about these things and perhaps also to only talk about these things with mommy or Daddy. use the phrase. "this is not daycare talk, this is home talk" :)
not a big deal for kids to question body functions and such, but its really not our job to educate that personal of topic, for Mom's and Dad's to address. ;)

haven't you ever watched any of those dirty reality shows? they talk about their birds....ha ha, they are reffering to their man parts.
why don't people just call it what it is and ther is no confusion.....what so wrong wit hsaying penis and vagina? that's how we raised our kids..my Mom about had a fit when she first heard my son say something about his penis.......like pee pee or wee wee is any less shocking. :) ha ha
I had a client once ... little girl two years old came into program one day and all day long she kept going on about her 'bird was hurting' and I was like 'oh I didn't know you had a bird, that is so sad ~ is mommy going to take it to the vet' and so forth she just kept getting frustrated and repeating her bird was hurting ~ so at pick up time I say to the mom 'I did not know you had a bird ~ what happened to it cause X was going on all day long about how her bird got hurt' .... turned out bird is what they called her vagina and well the kid was toilet trained I did not LOOK at her vagina on a regular basis so had no clue ~ poor thing had a yeast infection on the weekend and mom forgot to tell me :thumbdown:
I agree ~ call them by their commonly used terms ... even though the correct term is vulva as the vagina is the actual 'canal' at least it is better than BIRD or WOOHOO or whatever cause it is a part of the vagina!
we dont make special names for our fingers, why special names for any other part! ;)
Well, we all know that our little recorders often choose the WORST times to repeat things... But has anyone else noticed that parents are not as careful about what their children are seeing on TV??? I mean, why would a 3 year old be watching Jersey Shore????
Maybe it's just that there is such an onslaught of total garbage on TV these days. :rolleyes:
Inappropriate words are not to be used in the daycare and I would stress that to the parents right away. Just as karate kicks and guns are not appropriate in the daycare. What's the difference? Deal with it quickly so it isn't a big deal but if the child is allowed to do or say these things at home how are they supposed to know to turn it off when they walk into the daycare door. It's teamwork between the parents/caregiver to raise a child.
mom in alberta: I hope you don't think kids watch those dirty reality shows, it's bad enough that parents do, which I admit I have seen it before but don't watch it on normal basis, I was just saying that that's where the dumb term "bird" (i think) comes from...slang talk, you find most slang in dirty shows like that. Normal people call them by their given names.
uh oh, some of my boys have wrestling matches and do a little karate stuff, IF it stays "hurt free" I let boys be boys, and I have a ton of little country bumpkins here, so guns are a regular as well, no pointing at others, and when fighting no kicking others or punching but if they want to cut loose and show their moves? so be it, they are boys. I just remind if the words get dirty, i.e. poop talk at the table or I have a little guy who likes to say butthole instead of butt ("you hit me in the butthole") ;) I will remind that that talk is for the bathroom only. If they give me the "my mom lets me say it" I give them the "your not at your Mom's house" they know what they can say and do at my house and what they can say and do at home and the two are not always the same. :) kids are smart, they catch on quick!
Oh, I wasn't necessarily talking about this child specifically. I just mean kids in general. It seems like they are watching a lot of questionable content. That is what I am seeing, anyway.
I had a conversation about this with my second son the other day. He started out by asking why he isn't allowed to watch certain shows (his friend watches Walking Dead??!!?? he is 9). But in the end he actually thanked me, because he doesn't feel like he "should be" watching them.
So this thread just got me thinking. Sorry, didn't mean to hijack or anything!!
I think that the topic is connected, because I see these aggressive little kids and find out that they watch UFC with Daddy. "Gee, I don't know WHY Johnny is punching his friends." Well, what do you think is going to happen??
Yes I have seen this over and over in my career ... I had one little dude who was the most gentle caring empathetic soul I had ever seen ... a 3 year old with an old soul that everyone one would have cloned ....and than his dad decide he was old enough to be introduced to the 'dark side' and let him start watching Star Wars and after two weeks of dealing with HORRIBLE behaviors as he emulated the 'Dark Elevator' I had to finally go to the clients and say 'either the aggressive TV at home goes or your child goes ~you choose! As unfortunately the change in his behavior adjusting to these programs is not appropriate and cannot be tolerated in my program' ... it took another month after dad promised no more 'adult' shows would be watched but the kid turned it around ... and I do not care if I 'over stepped' my place in their right to parent how they choose cause they were free to choose to LEAVE if they valued letting him watch those shows and behave like that all I was letting them know was that HERE that value and behavior is not acceptable and since this is my house I have the right to only allow certain things ;)Quote:

got you, alberta. ;) my son is also 9 and comes home from school in aww of the fact that kids in school talk about that show (the walking dead) and they talk a ton about zombie video games too! shocks us, their parents allow it! my husband enjoys that show....I just don't see the entertainment in it, when it comes on....I go to bed! yuck! attempted to watch it once with him and found it quite disturbing! no wonder kids and grownups are so wierd these days, this is what fills their heads at bed time no less! :no:
I think that potty language is pretty normal for a 3 year old. :mellow:
I would just calmly remind him on a regular basis that some people don't like to hear about those things in polite conversation. I don't think it's a big deal.
And yeah, why do people get so hung up on body part names? lol
