would you report a provider who takes on too many kids?
Such a tough question. A part of me says that it's none of my business and I probably wouldn't. Another part of me would be concerned for the amount of kids in care.
I would have to be really certain something wasn't right. Sometimes looks can be decieving.
Are you absolutely sure that some of the children are not her own? If you know for sure she is over the limit, yes you should report her because you could be saving a child's life. But that's just my opinion.
Child's safety is número uno in my opinion, so yes if she's over I would, however, if there is more than one adult supervising and the ratio was reasonable I may think twice about it.
It would depend. Are they all big kids? ie. 5 and up. or are they all little? under 3? is it a mix with mostly big/small? Does she have control or are they running into the street? Are poopy diapers getting changed in a timely manner? Is there a shortage of available care in your area? Would you want someone to call and report you? These are all valid questions you need to ask yourself.
How over is she? I know although yes it is illegal that a lot of caregivers at one time or another have doubled up such as with an older sibling on a PD day or started a new child a week before the old child left rather than risk losing the replacement child.
If you know the provider you could speak to her provider to provider and say that you have noticed that she appears to be over the legal limits and how that can effect her insurance and that if you have noticed the numbers others will have too including the parents she provides for and that the ministry can charge her a fine and close her daycare if they report her..... notice I worded it so that it totally appears that someone other than you would be the one reporting and that you are only warning her. Then if you do report her you might get away without her knowing or blaming you.
I might - it depends on whether I felt she had everything under control. A friend of my sis in law was reported a couple of towns over, and they came to her house and threatened a 20k dollar fine if she was still over ratio when they did another surprise visit. So, those are the consequences.
I'd want to be absolutely CERTAIN that she IS over ratio, though. I will soon look as though I am over, but I won't be. I have three kids of my own, plus three toddlers, and four school aged daycare kids. Thing is, of my four school aged daycare kids, two are over ten years old. Basically, I am going to have nine/ten kids here every day this summer, but will be working legally. I'd be incredibly pissed off if someone came to my door accusing me of doing otherwise. Just a thought.
On the overage kids again with the insurance issue even though it is legal to have them if the insurance only covers 5 kids then they would not be covered and a claim would be denied for being over 5. I know for years we just did it and the ryder was not number specific as it was just assumed by both parties that as long as you were operating within the law you were covered. I am mom to four so yes I get the concept of half the neighbourhood being at my house everyday and how it looked.
I dont know the person but i've had calls from people looking for care who appear to be coming from the same provider. all the stories are the same. my first issue is of course safety, the second is that its providers who dont follow rules that make it difficult for all of us to convince parents that private home daycare is the way to go.Quote:

all valid points and i would never report unless i had first hand info. I of course wouldnt want someone to report me but I also have nothing to hide. Its breaks my heart to hear of the neglect of children and i've heard a few stories all sounding exactly the same in the last few months. i guess the responsibility should lie with the parents to report. Sad thing is that the person that contacted me a few weeks back didnt know the rules and regulations. I came as a big shock that there should only be 5 kids under 5 that dont belong to the provider.Quote:

thats really how i feel. I would have to outright ask the people contacting me who the provider is in orde to see for myself because i dont know her. its just odd to get so many calls with the same story. clearly lots of her clients are looking to move. one parent i spoke to said that during their interview the providers spun the story to say that there would never be more than 5 kids but they had more than 5 clients but with part timers and b/a schoolers and drop ins etc that the schedule just worked out but thats not the way it has played out. one arent i spoke to has mentioned it to the providre several times but it is just brushed off and nothing is done.Quote:

I do not know who the provider is...have never met her or seen her out in the neighbourhood. I cannot be sure that what the parent told me is the truth although I believed what she said. For me, unless I know for sure first-hand that this is happening and that kids are at risk, I would not report. I would just let the parent know that if they are concerned for the safety of the kids in that daycare and they believe she is over-ratio, then they should report her. They are the ones with the first-hand knowledge.
