Seriously?! Have to beg for diapers?

It never fails to amaze me in the 3 years that I've been doing this the behaviour of various parents I've had over the years.

I've started a new family a month ago. Well educated and both parents in very good positions. Since day one they have been bringing in 2 to 3 diapers a day for their 2 yr old child. It is stated in my contract and after repeatedly writing down on their daily reports "Need more diapers" they still only allot 2/3 diapers a day. They've told me from day 1 "We only change her twice a day :blink:" Today at drop off I spoke to dcd. Told him I need a minimum of 4 diapers a day. This also elevates the need to remind parents 2 or 3 times a week that I need diapers. Told him that all my daycare families leave a package of diapers here. His response "Well, we don't change pee diapers" What?!:no: Well, sorry here at daycare I don't leave a child in a "Pee" diaper. Especially girls. Told him I have scheduled changes and of course, if there is an immediate need for a diaper change.

So he reluctantly handed over exactly 20 diapers for 1 week ( 4 per day). He was not happy. What's wrong with people? Seriously dcd it's not like I'm using them for any other reason then to diaper your child's tushie :mad:

So weird!!! They just let her sit in a pee diaper until it explodes? All my parents bring those huge Walmart boxes!!

That is the most disgusting thing! They don't change pee diapers?! Wow! Are they seriously that cheap???!!!

Wow, lazy cheap parenting. I think we have all encountered the heavy pee diaper, especially after nap. Do they know what kind of strain this causes on these young backs?

I'd be embarrassed if someone thought I didn't change my kids often enough. I for sure wouldnt have protested it. Makes you wonder how often the children are bathed and their nails clipped. Yuck.

Good for you for being insistent! It would reflect poorly if another parent came for pickup and could smell this child's pee diaper, so I'm glad he finally decided to give in.

Oh my! I think that is one of the dumbest most irrational things I have ever heard from a parent!!

Maybe they should try potty training her? Oh, wait...that would mean they would have to change wet undies if she had an accident.....LOL!!

I totally get where they are coming from and truthfully the diaper quality has been improved to the point it is not necessary to change kids every 2 hours like we did with cloth diapers or the older dispoables. In theory the diapers are designed to hold 3 full wettings. This works for some kids but not others of course. It could be that the child piddles more than does a complete soak at a time and therefore it will hold more. There is no reason to be grossed out by a child in a peed diaper - they wear the same one all night long and pee at least a couple times in it.

Having said that leaving a bag of diapers at my house is the only option because I do not have time to go searching in diaper bags every day and need them at the ready in the drawers by the change table. Unless the child actually poops in the middle of the day and you can't adjust the time for diaper changes to take this into consideration there is little reason to need more than 3 per day 9am, 12 am, 3pm works fine for me most days. The one year olds yes may need late morning and before nap too but older children probably not.

I agree with play felt .... The diapers of today specifically pampers are 12-hour diapers and my own children would sleep all night between 11-12 hours and not be changed. Only time they ever leaked was when I needed to go up a size. I change my dcks twice at 11 (right before lunch) and after nap. If they poop in between those times then of course I change it right away. Most of the time there is barely anything in it and I have never had a dck with diaper even remotely close to doing damage to a child's back.

I check them at 10 before outside to see if they need a change. I change at lunch, after nap regardless of if they need it or not. I find the diapers bunch when they sleep... that can't be comfy. and I check them again at 4 to see if they need a clean one before they go home. And poops of course when they happen.

Its so odd that they're trying to limit diaper changes when I would assume most parents would be concerned if their child wasn't changed enough.

I would just let them know that you don't intend to use all 4 every day, but you don't want to be caught short if she has an off day. What if she comes down with diarrhea? YOu have to be prepared.

on average I use about 3 diapers but some need more, but it depends on the kids. But I don't change every 2 hours. Most don't even pee in 2 hours.

I generally use 3 diapers a day for each child. I check them after snack, after lunch, and after nap. If they are really wet or poop in between these times I change them, but then they generally won't need to be changed at our diapering time. I think 4 a day is a good guideline, it allows you to have extras on hand. I require parents to leave a supply and I will let them know when I need more. I've never had anyone argue.
Now my first time mom sister in law just told me that they will only be changing their new born every three hours on a schedule. "Those diapers can hold a lot and are expensive." She said to me. She'll learn soon enough that there are occasions that the diaper will get too full and leak and stink and cause a rash.

I normally use 3 diapers per child per day, but of course it can be up to 5 if they poop a lot (I have some super poopers..LOL). Obviously, if the diaper is dry, I don't change it, but I can't imagine only usng 2 diapers for an entire 9-10 hour day! I know they have improved, but I sure wouldn't want to sit in a wet diaper so why would the kids? That is crazy that they don't want to bring you diapers! Does their child get rashes?

I must be seriously anal but I change diapers like 4 to 5 times a day. When I'm 80 I dont wan't to sit in my pee so why would I make someone whos a baby sit in it!

I have my regular change times at approx. 9:30am, before sleep at about 12:30 and after nap and after afternoon snack about 3:30. It totally depends on the child, too , I've had kids who poop every few hours so that means more diapers! On average it's 3x per day though.

Diapers are not cheap and really a baby knows nothing else so sitting in a wet diaper is something they have done since even before they were born since they were in water. We have to be careful of putting our own feelings onto a child. Yes when I am an adult I want to be changed frequently but start saving now because they cost a dollar a diaper. My special needs daughter is changed about every 6 hours but again has never known it any different but yes it costs us about $5 a day to diaper her - cheaper to change and launder wet clothes just gross though.

It all does come down to cost for parents as they see this as an area they can cut down on to save money. If parent is saying don't change often and child doesn't wet through or get rashes then it isn't up to me.

My DD is one of those children that would get the worst rashes if she sat in pee for longer than 20 minutes. We taught her at very young age to tell us if she went. I by no means am putting my own feelings on any child it is a believe of mine. I do know that adult diapers are very costly my dear grandpa used to cut his in half to save money. I have also seen my dear grandmother tell me stories of how the nursing home would make her sit in hers for too long and it was extremely uncomfortable.

I'm sure you serve your DD very well and have found a system that works well for her comfort level. It's easy to say how we would do things I suppose but until we walk a day in someone else's shoes.

I have a friend who has been in child care for years and she would only change her DD when her diaper was bursting at the seams. It worked well for them!

I personally as a daycare provider choose to change my daycare children more frequently. I haven't had a parent complain once.

Actually today's diapers don't feel wet .... The next time you change a diaper run your hand over it .... It doesn't feel wet because of the way the diapers are made .... So the child does not feel wet and therefore not uncomfortable .... I think play felt is right on both accounts we are transfering our feelings and parents want to cut corners in the diaper area.... That being said all my families bring me big cases of diapers and wipes and I let them know when the supply is getting low.

It's good to hear all sorts of viewpoints on this.

Short of the matter is, it drives me BATTY when Friday rolls around and low and behold DCG's diaper bin is down to 1 diaper. And she's due for her poop blowout before noon!

This is the primary reason why I asked DCD straight out...Allow for min. 4 diapers a day. And bring them weekly. This is so I don't have to run out and be scrambling to send him or DCM a text to remind them. All my daycare families always bring boxes or packages to daycare. This is so I'm not scrambling through diaper bags in the morning hoping that dCM or DCD remembered that today we need 3 more diapers!! :no:That's crazy. I'm far to busy to be scrounging for diapers and don't see why the diapers sitting at their house when DCG is here all day, 5 days a week can't sit in her diaper drawer here at daycare KWIM?

And yes, I will change diapered children at certain parts of the day. The older ones go potty (or try if they are learning). 99.9% of the time, there is pee in the diaper. So yes, I will put a fresh one on. It does not make sense to me to slap the old one back on.

This is my system also with poops changed as necessary too of course. But they don't change her? Eeeeeeew!!! My system is to have parents bring diapers every Monday, 20 at least for 2 and under even if they are training. When children are starting to stay dry for some diapers I switch it to on demand.

Train those parents to follow your rules!

I have parents bring me a big package and then on Friday I will tell them if what is left is not enough for the next week and ask for another package on Monday. They never know if that means I am ok till Wed or Thursday or whatever. It is just one of those things I get on Monday. Monday is a good day for me to ask for things because it is also payday so they are thinking of me.

So awful. I have parents that do this. I ask and ask and they 'forget' or say they only need to change her once or twice a day. I have sent a email recently saying that if a child doesn't come with at least 4 diapers for an entire day that I cannot accept them into care for sanitary reasons. They generally also send this kid to me in the morning with the same diaper she's worn and peed in ALL night. Poor kids. I would start refusing care at the door or let them know if she runs out if diapers, they will need to come get her.
