Have any of you ever transitioned a child while they were sick?
This is the first full time week for a 13 month old girl I am transitioning. She has whatever hella virus has been going around (I even have to give her antibiotics).
However, I am wondering if we are all asking too much of this little girl. She had such a hard day yesterday and is clearly not feeling well.
What do you all think?
Continue on like you normally would. Yes, it likely will take a bit longer than normal for her to transition but there's not much you can do. Kids get sick but life has to go on.
I had a boy start last Fall and he ended up having to get a cast put on his arm. I think this might have had a bit to do with his difficult transition period (all day everyday crying for 2 weeks) but what else could we do? Once they are comfortable with you the transition period gets easier.

I think they may keep her home tomorrow as they suspect she may be dehydrated. No wet diaper today only BM's and not taking in any liquids :(
Hopefully they keep her home.....if she has a virus then they wouldn't give her antibiotics...there must be more to it. Although I know taking time off for a sick child may be difficult especially when returning to work initially after mat leave but it would have probably been in the best interests of everyone if she didn't start till she was better. Transition periods can be hard enough without a sick 1 year old. This may make the whole transition time longer and harder as the child started off on a rough note from day one. Hopefully things go smoother for you in the coming days/weeks.
If the child is sick she should be home. Not only is she not feeling well but you are trying to transition which in itself if a long process. She needs to be well enough to participate in a full day of daycare to be there. AHHHH....poor thing!
Try to suggest they get her some pediasure or pediapops to help restore her electrolytes.... Being dehydrated is not good
I agree with crayola kiddies! Hopefully whatever she has clears up soon so that she can get into transitioning with you so much better!! Poor little girl!
Thanks everyone! Yes, it has made for some longs days! It is mostly just hard because I don't know her yet and she is feeling so poopy! I guess we will see!
My new little one got sick late last week as well, while in his transition week. He was off Friday and back on Monday, it was a little rough but he did ok. Just give her extra cuddles and hopefully she will settle in soon.
well. she seems to be better, but I do have a baby who cries all day-I forgot how hard transitioning is :(
Daycare123, transitioning is just about the only thing I truly hate about this job! It does get easier over time though!
I think if a child is sick, regardless of when it falls, they should NOT be in care. I also think it sets up a really bad precedence for the future with regard to asking parents to abide by your sick policies of your contract if you start out accepting a child that shouldn't be there.
