Just wondering how many of you are closing due to bill 10 (or whatever other reason) and what your plans are afterwards?
I will go back to teaching (was on supply list prior to having my daughter, now 2yrs old). But don't plan to return until she is in school full time. Hoping by then the teaching field is a but better, as in, some permanent positions and hopes of a classroom of my own! Doubtful. Bill 10 no longer affects me (in regards to the ratios etc) as I dropped my Dck numbers drastically in the fall.
Not closing due to bill 10 as I was always planning to go and do my degree and applied prior to the bill even coming up and I deferred until this September. Double majoring in Psychology and Sexuality Studies. That's going to be me for the next 6 years of my life so watch this space ;-)
Closing in part because of Bill 10 but also just because it makes sense for me at this stage in my life. Both kids are off to school in September so I'm closing end of June taking the summer off to spend with my kids and also job search, hoping to be employed by late August/September. I have no post secondary education so the options are wide open. But I've been quite good at landing good jobs in the past so I am very confident! I am hoping to find something part time too. Well see what's out there!

I am unaffected by the bill (in another province) but I opened my hdc with the intent to run it as a life long career so I really hope something like this bill doesn't ever affect me in MB. (We already have similar rules to bill 10) It's sorta put the seed in my head and I do think I should start to think of a backup plan in case I ever do need to close!!
LeeBee...sounds like you have a great back up plan ready to go!
Bright...what are you planning on doing with your degree when you are finished?

In my dreams I'd love to get my masters in Sexology in San Francisco....given that my husband can work anywhere in the world for his company and our kids are older, we could probably make it work on a temporary basis living out there. There are so many possibilities with these degree choices....I wouldn't mind incorporating both into private practice, offering psychotherapy and/or sex therapy half and half to make up full time hours. Also I would love to advocate for adolescents within the LGBTQ community more specifically Trans. I also love to research, so maybe I'll end up clinging to a coffee mug for long days in a small room lined with books and the internet for a time...that kinda sounds like my happy place ;-) Who knows, so many more possibilities out there that I'm sure I don't even know exist too. I sign up for my classes next Friday and I am absolutely terrified!!!!Quote:

Not sure yet what I am going to do, but we got our daughters into the daycare center attached to their school, so the first step is complete!
The obvious choice for me would be to go back to teaching, but I don't know yet. I think my ideal would be to get a part time teaching position (which I have had before) and then supplement that with subbing or some other kind of work so that my outside of school hours work load isn't too crazy - I really want to have family time.
I am happy for you BrightSparks, but don't envy your 6 years of university - been there, done that! It was a long haul and I was soooo happy to graduate and be done with sitting listening to lectures and writing essays. So whatever I do likely will NOT envolve going back to school! Lol
LOL I am one of those crazy people who loves writing essays and research. I love to learn. I'm also going to a university campus with a very unique set up. My largest lecture in 1st and 2nd year would only be 300 people and in 3rd year I can expect to have less than 10 people in most of my major classes. I am happy enough, maybe foolishly and naively to be in school for 6 years from a learning perspective. I am however terrified at the financial aspect of things given that I have 2 teenagers who are by far more expensive than little kids and funnily enough, although not haha at all, my husbands new job position saw him lose some of his financial benefits today, effective Monday, so now it looks like I may be in this game a little bit longer and go part time on Fridays for the first semester or so, so I can save up some money for expenses...I do not qualify for any student loans or scholarships which is a frightening reality, nothing that I didn't already know, but sitting here thinking about it has me in a panic that's for sure. These are the kind of things I'm terrified of. Going to school, meeting new people and learning is long overdue for me.Quote:

i am green with envy. I am thinking of closing my full day in 2 years then at hat point just doing after school and pd, summer ect. Then go back to school, for what ???????????? who knows, but just to go back for something.
have you tried cutting your hours?
I learned so much in university, including taking a class or two in psychology and sexuality, and really didn't mind the essay writing part - got pretty good at it by the end. I was a Education student with a History major so there was lots of research and essay writing! I took the big first years classes with lots of people, and the small specialized classes with a handful of people. But I was there for 6 years, just like you will be, and by the end I was so done with it all. It put me in a bad mood just having to sit in class participating in lectures (and I'm usually a pretty laid back and happy person)! lol!Quote:

Yes, it is stressful when you financial situation changes all of a sudden. My husband got laid off from his job BOTH times that I was pregnant. I was unbelievable the second time it happened! But we persevered and it all worked out in the end.
But I truly hope your educational experience is positive and that in the end you have a career that you enjoy! Good luck!
I have been doing daycare for over 34 years. I enjoyed it as it allowed me to look after my kids and the household errands. I am ready to retire by December. The hardest part is not having any adult conversation since my friends either moved away or died. I am finding it hard right now as a couple of my DC kids are off with parents on disability or child is severely ill (off for months). I just put my ad back on daycare bear, but really not looking forward to starting over when I am that close to retiring. Yes, I am glad Friday comes too!

With the election coming up in october, if the ndp wins they want a canada wide $15/day childcare system. Just wondering if they plan on paying the rest of the fee? There is no way anyone can make a decent income on about $300 per spot. Then I read some articles on how they want to cap fees based on a parents income in Quebec now. Don't know if that's just for centers or homes as well. I just don't like the government having so much control over how much I can potentially make. I've been applying for jobs so hopefully I'm done soon!
I don't know if they have a decent plan to make that work across Canada, however I can speak for how it works in Manitoba. I chose to become licensed, and let them set my rates. So my rates range from 6 - 25 dollars per day. That's after school care to infant care, and all ages in between. So that's what the parent pays, and I get additional funding from the province every 3 months, based on how many spots I'm licensed for.Quote:
