No diapers at naptime - VENT

Sorry to start the day off on a sour note, but I need to get this off my chest. I have an almost 3 year old girl in my care. Her parents came to me this A.M. and announced that she woke up dry this A.M. so she no longer needs to wear a diaper at naptime. :blink: Say what ? One dry night does not potty trained make. :mad: I tried a couple of naptimes last week with this child and she soaked her bed both times, so I am pretty sure that she's just not ready to be "dry" while she sleeps. It was a massive job to clean everything up, and I am NOT doing it again. This child will only be with me until the end of the month - her parents are going to have Gramma care for her. I'm not writing off a perfectly good playpen just because the parents want me to do the heavy lifting of potty training. :mad: Isn't it interesting how parents always seem to get the urge to master potty training when they're going to be changing a whole lot more of the diapers ?

My rule is one MONTH of waking up dry absolutely no accidents before the child may go for naps without a pullup on. They can be in underwear during the day but a pullup goes on for naps till I say so. We change back to underwear after nap so one pullup lasts all week just worn for the two hours of naptime so not expensive but necessary.

Since she is done in a month I wouldn't even be worrying about potty training other than if she asks and let grandma work one on one with her.

Wow! That's crazy. I would smile and nod in front of the parents, but put that pull up on for nap time. Especially if she's off to gramma's in a month.

I have a 3 year old that I still put a pull up on at nap time. I have 5 kids in my care, he's only been trained for a few weeks and although he has success 9 out of 10 days, I don't have time or the ability to clean it up on the 10th day with all my kids here.

He'll drop the nap and go to quiet time in the summer. And that's when I plan to fully drop the pull up.

I'm just not set up at this point to take kids to the potty half way through a nap. And my quiet time is toooo valuble to have it interupted by a bladder that's not fully developed yet.

Yup ... Pull up or diaper at nap time ... If they won't supply I would get some of the cheapest ones I could find or a plastic pant over the undies and when the undies go home wet everyday they will see the reality. Or duct tape a large garbage over the mattress of the play pen and then put the sheet over top and send them the wet bedding and clothes everyday .... Ask them to wash them and return them for the next day ....

Just don't do it. You slap a diaper on that kid whenever YOU see fit. I will not allow dcparents to tell me when their child will or will not be in a diaper in MY care. I am the one who has to clean up the mess. I am a reasonable person who has a lot of experience with children and I know when a kid is ready or not. Besides, it's unsanitary for the rest of the kids to be exposed to some other kid's pee and poop.

This happens a lot, BTW....parents always want the provider to potty train when the kid is about to leave care. I refuse to even help if that is the case.

Depending on how confrontational you want to be in the last month of care, I would either tell them that she WILL be wearing something at naptime, or (as others said) just smile, nod, and do what you need to do.

Your house. Your rules. There's no way I'd put her for nap with no diaper. I'd tell the parents that if she was dry at my house for two or three weeks, I'd think about it. You're the one who'd have to clean it up.

I'm with everyone else.....slap a diaper on her! Let the parents keep that action all to themselves, thank you very much!

Thanks ladies - I freely admit that some of my "ugliness" on this issue is due to the fact that potty training is a H-U-G-E job, and I'm not all that interested in providing what I view as a huge service when they've been dishonest with me about what their caregiver plans were. That said, I'm glad to hear that everyone else has the same opinion as I do - the diaper stays !

I completely agree with you, you way, no how!!! My contract states there is a 30 day dryness period before I will allow no pullups or other coverage and if there is an accident the 30 days applies again. I've rarely had parents argue about that issue before because they know how busy I am with 5 children and don't have time to clean messes like that all the time.
