First month back! Almost too perfect....
Soooo, I have had new dcb for about 3 weeks and so far everything has been super easy! Have been patting myself on the back for doing such a great job picking out families that will be a good fit, baahaahaa!!! Until today.Mom texts me asking what I have been feeding him that makes him poop so much because he has a terrible rash. First, i can barely see any redness at all, let alone anything terrible. Second, he almost only eats rice products, cheerios, carrots and banana. He has dairy allergy. I have not given him berries, citrus, tomato etc. Then she says dad is trying to get an dr appointment to treat it? Crazy overreaction or just me???

Expansive...
The rash could be do to the bananas. My youngest gets a rash every time he eats them, not sure why. Both my sons and I also get the runs from eating them. Is this there first child? I would say if you haven't noticed anything major then they are more then likely over reacting.

Starting to feel at home...
Sounds like she's over-reacting, as some parents do,,,try cutting out 1 food at a time and see if this helps

Is he teething? That can sometimes change the bm making it loose and acidic. Is he eating any foods that can contain dairy? Parents will first look at the caregiver to blame for any changes in a child. She is correct to ask you, but I hope she asks in a polite, lets work together to solve this problem manner. If you feel you are being blamed and know you haven't feed any dairy, then keep calm face and tone and let her know you are as mystified as she is.
If you can't see any problem why are they making an issue out of it? I would just smile and recommend a diaper cream like baby bum bum which I found works great. I would say she has a concern and is over reacting if in your opinion the redness is minor. Sounds like they want you to feel bad/responsible for this. Don't let them make you feel this way.
Oh and welcome back

When I served juice (I no longer do); my own son and another DCB would get rashes. As soon as I stopped, no more rashes...just a thought.
Children are great imitators.
So give them something great to imitate.

Ugg hate when parents asking in an accusatory fashion when stuff like this is occurs ~ I get they need to find the 'root cause' but there are POLITE ways to do it where the provider does not end up feeling attacked or accused of something ... you know like 'Hey I noticed that little Johnny is getting a diaper rash ~ we have not introduced any new foods or anything and wanted to double check if he has anything new in daycare or if you had any other ideas what might cause a diaper rash cause this is his first one? .... no blame there just a information gathering question that is using the provider as a 'resource' not a blame box!

This was my first thought too ~ my understanding of our biology is that during teething the body naturally produces increased acidity in salvia to help new teeth 'break through' the gums ... saliva than gets swallowed by children for some children they do not react to this at all for others this changes their stomach acidity which makes both urine and poops more acidic as well causing looser stools and diaper rashes.
For some children juice, certain fruits and combinations of foods has the same problem ~ increases the level of stomach acid and therefore that gets passed over in their urine and poop and if they have sensitive skin to boot diaper rashes.
Children construct their own intelligence. The adult must provide activities and context, but most of all must be able to listen. Children need proof that adults believe in them. Their three great desires are to be listened to, to understand, and to demonstrate that they are exactly what we expect."

Thanks everyone!!! He is allergic to dairy, not an intolerance, so for sure has not had any contact. I don't serve juice. I nicely suggested to teething to mom. On another positive note....all my spaces are full but I have staggered everyone's start days by a month. So dcb number 2 started today, not a tear in sight! Ate well and now out like a light! Now, if only I could get my 8month and 2 year old daughters to sleep!!!!

I would try to turn her around a little. I would act very concerned " I noticed there was some red there too... I wonder if he's teething? today he ate.... What kind of things is he eating at home? "
I think sometimes they ask us in an acusing way to see if we get defensive or not.
Good luck, first time moms can be the worst at over reacting. It will take time to gain her full trust.

So I emailed that I had consulted the geniuses on my daycare forum and that, in the absence of changes in diet, suggested (as I had) that maybe it was a reaction to teething. Dad emailed me back to say that Mom had called dr. and they told her the same thing and no need to come in. Tee hee!
